Who We Are

For too long there has been a shortage of a website or books with walks that take a day. When I retired I decided that one of my aims in life was to log for all walks that take between 6 to 10 hours or are 12 to 20 miles long. And it would be free.

Having spent a life time in the steel industry getting frustrated that I couldn't get out on the moors when I wanted suddenly a down turn came and the plant I worked at closed. At 58 I was young enough to get fit again to take up a passion I had since I was taken on a school hiking holiday in my early teens. That holiday changed my life, as I realised how much I enjoyed, not just the countryside and the physical exertion it takes to get high up and away from the roads, but the isolation, beauty and remoteness that high fells and moors bring.

This site tries to give something back for the hours of pleasure spent on the fells and moors.

All the walks have been walked by me and a few other dedicated nutters who have a similar outlook and love for the outdoors. All the walks need you to climb because I also learnt I don't like walking on the flat.

If you don't like it - tough - but I'm willing to listen and make improvements

In 2010 things began to change - it started with cramp at the end of a long day by myself on Bleaklow. Within a year the cramp happened after 30mins but by then then walks had stopped. In 2013 I was diagnosed with Parkinsons. The drugs I was put on eventually stopped the cramp and the walks started but I cut down the distance to 10-15 miles. Eventually I started a blog - https://daywalksdalesandlakes.blogspot.com

Thanks

I would like to thank Phil, Dennis, the two Jon's, Martin, David, Dianne, Pete, Peter and a few others who have accompanied me on the walks. I also have to dedicate this to my wife, Maggie, for the time I've spent away from home on the walks and at the computer writing up the walks and putting them on the site. In Nov 2020 Phil died; he is sadly missed.
