Summary The walks starts at Crowden and climbs up to Highstone Rocks before tracking down the top of the Etherow Valley and dropping down to Arnfield. From here you climb up Ogden Clough onto Ormers Moor and the Wilderness to get glorious views from the top of Chew Brook. You now descend and walk along the banks of Dovestone, Yeoman and Greenfield reservoirs before climbing up Birchin Clough onto Raven Stones. The next section is a lovely walk high above the three reservoirs back to Chew Reservoir with magnificent views over the western side of the Pennines and the industrial towns and cities of Lanchasire. The last part involves a short climb up Laddow Moss to Laddow Rocks before descending down Crowden Great Brook to the car park at Crowden A lovely walk with good views around Chew/Greenfield and Crowden Great Brook. A walk for a clear day so that you can appreciate the views. The highlight is the scramble up Birchin Clough. And if you go in June, then all the moors will be covered in cotton grass which makes even the foreboding Saddleworth Moor and its hidden secrets look magnificent. Route finding is reasonably easy but it can be difficult over Ormes Moor and the Wilderness if the visibility is poor. However, this is a walk that should be down when visibility is good. There are reasonable paths most of the way except over the Wilderness and the path around the tops above Chew and Dovestone reservoirs is intermittent You can select either to look at the text of the walk (Text Only) or read my diary and summary of the walk (Diary) |
