Summary

The walk starts from the top of Westend Valley, climbs up to Alport Castles before dropping to Alport Farm and on to Oyster Clough. From the top of Oyster Clough the walk takes you onto Hope Forest and across to Nether Reddale Clough. After walking down the Clough you proceed along the western edge of Alport Valley to Grains in the Water. From the Grains you walk up Hern Clough and across to Higher Shelf Stones before ascending to the summit cairn of Bleaklow Head. The route then takes you across s the peat 'desert' of the Bleaklow plateau to Near Bleaklow Stones and onto Bleaklow Stones. A good path then takes you to Grinah Stones before ascending a grough to the source of the Derwent and Barrow Stones. The return to the car takes you to Crown Stones and onto round Hill before descending the shooting track down the Westend Valley to the car

A grand walk with good views particularly of the Alport Valley and from Higher Shelf Stones. In the spring and summer there is lots of wildlife and the moor is sprinkled with flowering cloudberry, green blueberry plants and cotton grass.

The route is in general easy to follow, the exceptions being on Hope Forest Moor and the track from Higher Shelf Stones to Bleaklow Head.

A walk for a good clear day in late May early June
