Wet Moors, a Far Clough and an Old Railway Trail

Home Start Point Peak District Text Only Diary

Summary

The walk starts at the car park on the Woohead Road just before the Flouch in and accesses the moors through Crookland Wood and onto Hingcliff Common. From here you climb steadliy along Mickleden Edge and Cut Gate to Howden Edge and the Derwent Valley. You then follow the northern side of the Derwent Valley along Outer Edge, Featherbed Moss to Swains Head and on to Far Black Clough. Here you drop down to the Woodhead Tunnel before following the lin eof the old Manchester to Doncaster road to the summit of the Woodhead road. The route then descends via Windleden reservoirs to Dunford Bridge where you join the Trans Pennine Trail as far as Ctoe Bank Bridge. The final stage takes you to Swinden Walls before you walk back through Crookland Wood to the car aprk.

A good walk, but one where you need good visibility to see the moors at their best.

Most of the navigation is fairly easy now that a fair number of people walk over the northern edge of the Derwent valley from Cut Gate End to Far Black Clough. In misty conditions some care is needed if you loose the line of the path on this section.

Wildlife along the Trans Pennine trail is plentiful.
