Lovely Dales and Pretty Village

Home Start Point Peak District Text Only Diary

Summary

The walk starts at Calver walking up Coombes Dale, over Longstone Moor, down to Monsal Head and the iconic view down the Wye Valley. The middle part of the walk takes you along the Monsal Trail, down Monsal Dale to Millers Dale, then up Tideswell Dale and on to Tansley Dale and Cressbrook Dale. The last section involves walking over rolling hills from Wardlow Mire to the plague village of Eyam before finally dropping into Stony Middleton and returning to the car at Calver.

An excellent walk. The best part is the walk along the valley side from Cressbrook to Litton Mill. The geology on the walk is always interesting – dry valleys, the Wye Valley, and mines. The villages of Stony Middleton and especially Eyam are pretty. You need to spend time at Eyam to appreciate the history of the place. Cressbrook Dale and Monsal Dale are lovely; slightly behind are Coombs Dale and Tideswell Dale. And in every village there is a pub.

The route finding is straight forward as it's all on good paths or tacks. The only point where care is needed is on Longstone Moor.
