A great disappointment

Summary

The walk starts at Hulme End and for the first part walks down the Manifold Trail following the route of a narrow gauge rail line It meanders down the valley, occassionally crossing the river and passing Ecton and Weag Bridges before joining the River Hamps and finishing with the trail at Lee House. The walk back is Via Rushley and Castern Hall from where the highlight of the walk is reached as you walk along the top of the Manifold Valley. From here you cross fields to Wetton, circumvent Wetton Hill before climbing to the top of Ecton Hill and descending back to the Trail at Ecton. It's then a short track up the Trail to Hulme End and the car

A disappointing walk. The Manifold trail was tarmaced and when I walked it the wildlife none existent and the scenery drab. The route back was notable for the mud. It would be better walked in the spring or summer. However, there are a number of mines, Castern Hall is interesting and Wetton is pleasant. The views form Ecton Hill and along the top of the Dove /Manifold Valley are pleasant but limited- rolling hills rather than moorland vistas – and everything was muddy. A word of warning in wet weather watch out for the wooden slatted bridges. They, like limestone, were very slippery in the wet.

The route finding is straight forward as it's all on good paths or tacks.
