Muker Gunnerside Punchard Gill Tan Hill Keld Muker 18th June 2010 Mines, Moorland and a Magic Dale |
|
Map copyright Ordance Survey Summary The walk starts at Muker and walks down the Swale to Ivelet and on to Gunnerside. From Gunnerside you climb up Slade Hill onto the moors. A good track takes you to Doctor Gate from where you cross more moors to Great Punchard Gill. From here you cross isolated moors to Tan Hill Inn. The route follows a good path up West Moor, along Annaside Edge to William Gill. You climb away from Willaim Gill on to Mirk Fell and onwards to the remote Tan Hill Inn. The return to Muker takes the Pennine Way south over Stonedale Moor to Keld from where you walk down the Swale to Muker It's a fabulous walk. Walk it in early summer and the valleys are full on late spring flowers with the moors carpeted in cotton grass. There's lots of wildlife in the Dale and there are always oyster catchers to accompany you down the upper reaches of the Swale. The paths are generally good and the route finding is relatively straight forward except to the west of William Gill. It's a walk that should be done in early summer and on a day with good visibility.
