Map copyright Ordance Survey Route starts green but diverts onto purple and back onto green to finish. Alternative is green. Summary The walk starts at Muker and heads round the eastern side of Kisdon to Keld. After crossing the Swale the route follows the Pennine Way to the highest Inn in England at Tan Hill. After a rest the route heads across mainly pathless moorland of Mirk Fell to Water Crag. From the high point the walk drops down to Blakethwaite Gill and subsequently crosses Gunnerside Gill below Gorton Hush. A track takes you down the western side of Gunnerside Beck before you leave the track and walk round Knot Top and drop down to Ivelet. The last part to the walk takes you up the northern bank of the Swale to Ramps Holme Bridge from where there is a short walk back to Muker. It's a hard day's walk. Good progress can be made tol Tan Hill. But after that it's hard work crossing pathless moorland until you get to Water Crag and drop down to Blakethwaite Gill. From here it's straight forward again along tracks and paths. It's a walk for a summers day with good visibility. You need to be proficient at route finding from Tna Hill to Blakethwaite There are good views from the tops and Swaledale is always the most magnificent of the Dales.
